How come my baby boy had a low birth weight..What could be some reasons?
Hello ![]()
My baby was born at 35w4d via an emergency c section due to having GRADE III placenta and the cord was wrapped around his neck twice. So I thought he was gonna weigh like 6 pounds and to my surprise he came out weighing 4 pounds 1 oz.! I was in shock...Ofcourse he's a healthy 8 pounder now at 7 weeks and doing great..but I was just wondering how come he had a low birth weight?
Thanks
6 pounds would have been on the big side for a 35 week preemie. Babies should gain about half a pound a week in the last 6 weeks or so. So counting back from the average size of 7.5 lbs at 40 weeks about 5 pounds would be expected. But the main reason he was probably smaller than 5 pounds was due to the fact that you had a grade 3 placenta. The placenta wasn't delivering nutrients efficiently anymore so he wasn't able to grow as much as he should (intra-uterine growth restriction) That's part of the reason they did the c-section, because on the outside they could make sure he was eating enough to grow properly. On the inside with a placenta that's not feeding him well he was at risk of death.
